Katsuyo Aoki's Predictive Dreams
June 2012

Katsuyo Aoki has had numerous solo exhibitions and awards since graduating with a BFA in painting in 1998 from Tama Art University (Tokyo, Japan). In 2000 she received her masters in ceramic art and currently uses ceramics as a means of expression.

Sculls decorated in a rococo style make up her Predictive Dreams series. Each one-of-a-kind scull is made from cast porcelain. She says that her style references “historical backgrounds and ideas, myths, and allegories” - and in this series the decorated skulls have a parallel with the way myth “decorates” the phenomena of death with stories of an afterlife. I see this kind of over-the-top ornamentation as also being akin to a forest with growth upon growth making up the whole – an allegory for life itself. But you don't have to analyze her work to stand in awe of the beauty of Katsuyo Aoki's Predictive Dreams.
